Are the 'link' lights both on on the network cards? If not, nothing's
going to work. You need a cross-over cable if you're not using a hub.
These might be found at your local computer store.
Both computers should be routing the local network to the ethernet and
the command to check this would be netstat -r (or just netstat on
windows?). Both also have the route command but the syntax is
different. "route --help" or "route ?" is the command with help on
linux and windows respectively.
