Hi all, A while ago during the last discussions about laptops and linux, I saved the messages as I was intending to get one sometime. That time is almost upon me, so I have perused my archive and the recommended web sites, namely: http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ But I have discovered, as someone mentioned last time (in my archive), that they are all aimed at people who already have a laptop and are trying to get linux to work on it. They specifically avoid recommending brands/models etc. The type of laptop I'm looking at is: - first of all, second hand, preferably under about $1200 - colour (TFT would be nice) - pentium type (preferably above approx pentium 120) - must have a CD drive and a floppy drive (both built in would be nice, failing that at least a built in CD drive) - preferably a bootable CD drive (in the BIOS) other stuff I'm not too fussed about (things like memory, disk sizes, ethernet, modem etc can be added/upgraded). My chick is in favour of Toshiba, and the ones I've played with seem good, and against Acer due to the bad experiences her work have had with them. I'm only intending to run linux on it so it must be well supported by linux. Any recommendations?? What's the reliability and ease of getting parts/upgrades like for the lesser known brands? (eg. I looked at an Oris on the weekend - which I'd never heard of before) I also looked at a Toshiba Tecra 500 (or 550?) but was a bit put off by the fact I had problems getting it to boot sometimes (it had lose98 on it). The guy reckoned it was cos the BIOS was set to boot from floppy first then disk and the external floppy wasn't plugged in, it had the CD in the internal slot. He could hit the cntrl-alt-del buttons a few times and it would boot. Plugging in the floppy helped but it still got stuck a few times. Is this sort of thing normal for laptops or does it sound like this particular one was dodgy?
