It has been well over 3 years since SGI adopted Intel processors. This was
to mainly counter the cheap workstation market that the local chop shop can
sell with NT installed.
They came out with NT initially, and towards the middle of last year they
offered Linux on them.
Rumor has it that it will all be Linux first from now on as they can
manipulate the OS to get the best perf out of these beasts. The NT line has
not been doing so well.
The SGI kernel boys are pretty active in the kernel list arguing for some
patches to be applied to get Linux up to speed with Irix and they are also
porting XFS to Linux and then there is the whole OpenGL thingo.
