what i do is set up ipchains to log errors to the kernel, and then
configure /etc/syslog.conf to log ipchains related msgs to a file. this
way, you can see exactly what's happening between you and your isp, and
what needs to be accepted or denied. then a logical ipchains ruleset can
be constructed.
