Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I was wondering if anyone could
help me out. (And it's more interesting then petrol... :P )
I'm a fourth year IT under graduate from Charles Sturt University, (yes,
one of those uni's that has gotten into bed with Microsoft) and for one of
my final year subjects (Project Software Management and Quality
Assurance), I have to interview a real life Software Engineering Project
Manager (SEPM). Would anyone out there, in Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra,
on the list qualify as being in such a role? Or would there be someone in
your organization that would qualify as having this role? Or maybe you
have a friend/contact in another company who would carry out such a role?
(Maybe someone from Aurema Software? I had a friend who did the subject go
there last year...)
I'd be looking to carry out the interview in the two weeks 1 - 14 of
April. The interview will approximately take one hour.
Here is an abstract from the assignments description.
"This is a practical assignment that requires you to actually interview
(in person) a Software Engineering Project Manager (SEPM). That is the
interview is not to be done via the telephone. Note, that an eligible SEPM
in an organization may not actually be known by that precise title but
nonetheless perform many duties as such (i.e. project leader, team
leader). Failure to conduct an interview with an eligible person will
certainly attract an unsatisfactory grade in this assignment...
...You are to select a public or commercial organization that has a
software development division/department/section and you are to organize
an interview with an SEPM who has lead a team that has recently completed
or has almost completed a software development project. In order to get
value from this project, you should select an organization that has one or
more experienced SEPMs (or project/team leaders). The student is cautioned
from selecting a SEPM who is functioning at too high a level where he/she
is not managing a team on a week by week basis. An appropriate SEPM would
be one that is actively monitoring work tasks and is directly responsible
for human resource allocations to those tasks for most of the project's
life cycle...
...Note that it is usually easier to get the cooperation of a SEPM if the
student first clears the proposal with the SEPM's boss. The IT industry is
usually very supportive of helping educational institutions. It may be in
the student's interest to provide the prospective SEPM with a copy of this
assignment in order to secure his/her cooperation. In no circumstances
should you provide the SEPM with your prepared list of questions (this
point will be explained later)...
...You are advised (and are expected) to get a cassette tape recording of
your interview, as you will not likely be granted enough time with the
SEPM to physically write down all his/her responses. You may find it
necessary to follow up your interview up with some short telephone calls.
You must also be prepared to sign a document of confidentiality if
requested by the SEPM. The assessor of your assignment undertakes to treat
your submission in confidence. The assessor does not want to receive a
copy of the taped voice recording..."
