For a simple appletalk network `netatalk' will work. It won't work well
because Mac file sharing seems amazingly IO intensive. But it will work.
Personally after wrestling with netatalk for the last 3 days I've decided
to ditch it, I'd much rather buy DAVE (www.thursby.com) and run one less
protocol[*].
Oh, I freely admit my requires of netatalk are a bit more "unusual", but
samba can do what I need it to do with some convincing so I'll stick with
it.

[*] Plus when Max OS X comes out it'll be NFS capable and come with Samba
(and thus a smbclient).
