The gimp tutorial has instructions for installing fonts. You can get the
tutorial from your installation cd, or from the gimp site, the local ref
is
file:/usr/doc/gimp-manual-1.0.0/Fonts.html#446329
I just did this and now have dozens of new fancy fonts to use in gimp.
The tutorial seems to be quite complete.
The same material can be found at
http://manual.gimp.org/manual/GUM/GUM.html
in Part VIII, Script_Fu if you haven't got the cd close at hand.
You'll also need to add the path to the new directories to the XFree86
file if you want them available every session.
(Or do xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont) when you need these
fonts.
