Hi all,
Sorry about my late entrance to this string, but I had a bad experience
with Free BSD so I was busy cleansing my HDD for the last 3 days!
8^)
I am the person who started all of this and would like to thank you all for
your concern and your help is much appreciated! 8^)
Here is what I have done.
killed everything usefull on my box untill I can find a way to firewall
INTERNAL Services out so ppl from the outside cant even think of seeing them.
I ran Socklist and got a bit of a list of my open sockets.
also, to clarify, running samba and nmbd is fine as Optus block ports 137 -
139 on their network so people cant delete some lamers win
95/98/nt/someothercrappyMSproduct files that they may have shared.
but yeah, I will attach part of the email I recieved to show the really
basic and disgusting way that optus presented this 'server' problem to me with:
(P.S: I dont want to run any servers as I only have 17 k upload and hence
it would be a waste of time since your downloads suffer tremendously when
you upload)
Anyway. some words from optus:
Dear David
As outlined in the Optus @Home Acceptable User Policy (AUP) which you
agreed to when signing up for the Service, Optus @Home reserve the right to
monitor bandwidth, usage, and content from time to time to operate
Services; to identify violations of the AUP; and/or to protect the network
and Optus @Home users.
Monitoring the network ensures that services run by our customers are not
impeding the reliability, performance or security of the network and thus
are not impacting other Optus @Home subscribers.
A recent scan has shown that you are operating one or more network services
that fall outside the guidelines of personal use within the AUP.
Some of these services that we have identified are: UNKNOWN, SUNPC, PRINTER
We advise that you examine your personal system and disable any offending
services within 24 hours of receipt of this notification.
In the event that a network service you are running impacts the
reliability, performance or security of the network, Optus @Home reserve
the right to suspend your service, either with or without warning,
depending on the severity of the impact.
As you can see, I was told I had an "unknown", a "sunpc" and a "printer"
(ofcourse, I didnt know WTF was going on. so I replied and got a slightly
more explicit response noting that i had Ports: 111 (sunrpc), 515
(printer), 784, 805, 810 & 815 open.
So I called the techsupport line after removing Sunrpc and got the bloke to
scan my box.. and nothing turned up..
so thats the story..
dont ask me!
I'm not running any servers.. so as far as I am concerned its all ok..
Concluding, from my perspective, port scanning is not the best way to
determine the presence of a server.. It might be when your running servU
FTP on win 98 but not on a linux system.
Thanks again for your time.
yours sincerely
Dave Elkan..
happy cable users (over 30 gigs leeched!)
