Telstra don't care and they want people to have multiple lines now.
Voice, fax, dial-up.
They only want you to take the distinctive ring stuff if it means they
have to install extra copper. Although the age of a lot of the copper
around here mean that they have to replace all the cables anyway, so
it doesn't cost that much extra to drap a 50 pair instead of 20 pair
into the block. I know our street block has gone from one 20 to three
20 pairs into it over the last decade from extra lines to houses.
A lot of this really depends on your area. We have no cable out here
at all, just scum sucking AT&T sales people.
