Sorry to drag up an old topic that I should have been paying more
attention to at the time, but:
I'm looking to implement a real time video broadcast over a LAN.
This means I'll need some kind of video capture device, broadcast
software, player, etc. It needs to be cross platform as there
will be Linux as well as Win95/NT clients. Something like a web
cam would be ideal I guess.
What are people's experiences in this area? In particular, what
I'm after is information about:
- What sort of video capture equipment (camera/card/drivers)
works best.
- What sort of broadcasting software works best, and what
playback software do I need?
I've looked at a couple of commercial offerings, such as Citrix
VideoFrame and RealServer but they aren't real time enough. They
obtain higher throughput by doing a lot of compression, which
takes time (RealServer state that they get about a 20 second lag,
which isn't what I'm after).
I need something that is:
- Fast, i.e. near real time between camera and viewer.
- Good picture quality, high resolution is best.
- Reliable, eg: doesn't ever crash.
- Colour.
- One camera, many watchers (about 3, but maybe up to 12).
I'm prepared to sacrifice:
- Cheap.
- High frame rate: eg: I'd rather have 4 fps at a good
resolution than 24fps at 160x120.
- Audio. In fact I don't need audio at all.
- Low bandwidth usage, as this will be over a switched 10/100
LAN.
