No, it's not a smurf. A smurf is one where you set the source IP
address to be x.y.z.255, dest of x.y.z.255 and it bounces around in
their network forever.
I have seen smurfs, but I haven't seen one for ages. I'm now just
starting to see them again ... as well as the UDP port 137 probes,
which makes me suspicious that maybe Win 2000 is vulnerable to something
I haven't heard of yet.
I'm not seeing any follow ups to the pings or 137 probes, but then
again there are no 'doze boxes on the LAN anywhere.
