I don't know if i'm out-of-line here sending this message to this mailing
list, if so then please let me know.

I have recently installed linux on my system (RH6) and everything went fine
except that i can't seem to get my modem to work. I've done all the usual
"pnpdump" and "isapnp", "setserial" stuff but the behaviour is quite
erratic. Sometimes it seems like i can talk to the modem, but the modem
won't talk back. i.e. minicom hangs waiting for the "ok" but when i send
"ATDTsome-number" it dials the number ok. And the chat script dials and then
hangs waiting for 'rname:'. This isn't always the case though. Sometimes
it does nothing at all.

One thing to note is that my winnt "event viewer" registers an error and a
warning everytime i boot up. They are:

Error: The control registers for COM3 overlaps with the COM4 control
registers.
Warning: User configuration data for parameter COM3 overriding firmware
configuration
               data.

This is relevant because my modem (under windows) is on com4.

Now I consider myself somewhat of a linux enthusiast, but not when it comes
to the low-level io stuff. The only next step i can think of is to start
learning low level device/io programming.

If someone out there can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

John
