[lpd] I'm not sure what the brackets mean but mine doesn't have it..
what happens when you try a:
echo /etc/hosts | lpr -P laser
And do a lpc status quickly after the job and see if the daemon is present.
All else fails.. create a new printer using the Xwindows Control Panel..

I've replaced the IP address with x's.

$ ps -ef | grep lpd
root 1113 1 0 10:59 ? 00:00:00 [lpd]
