Nocol might not be a bad choice. This is a pretty decent all-round network
monitoring tool. You'd still need to make a script that pings the server
once and if fails will page you, nocol will handle the regular running of
the script though. It would be just as easy to cron the script if it's
just this one server, but if you are looking after more than one machine
this would probably be a good idea.
