I am wanting to make/purchase a machine to run Linux on a factory floor. It does not need a screen or keyboard, but the ability to plug one in to fix falts is required. Need network / serial / parallel ports and a small amount of disk space. Lack of fan would be a real bonus. I am happy to get the parts and make it myself. Now the other interesting bit is that it does not need to do any local IO once up and runnig so I could probably get away with a flash disk or something. What about remote boot? Any suggestions for setting up Linux for this environment? My main concern is someone turning the machine off and on. The software will startup okay but I am worried about a file system check halting the machine until a fsck is done. Problem is no one will know it needs doing, or how to do it. Basically I am trying to make a very reliable appliance. If it works well it will be a major win for Linux in the business and I can start to remove more NT machines.
