Partly out of flavour, partly the fact that recent mods to cpio broke
backward compatibility. First, the meaning of the `c' flag changed so
that newer versions of cpio couldn't read older archives written with
that option, and vice versa (the old `c' flag is now referred to as
`odc' I recall), then still later the `odc' flag writes bogus archive
data that can't be read back at all.
