Jeff's excellent Slug Pearl on my problem made me realise I hadn't posted the resolution of the problem (bad as it is)... What happened was my main superblock got corrupted on an ext2 partition containing losta of mp3s. Someone mentioned to me that the tool findsuper device (in this case findsuper /dev/hdc3 ) to find the superblock on the partition. It found the superblocks and then I could run e2fsck -b x /dev/hdc3 to recover my drive. Of course doing that found lots of errors and ended up giving me a lost+found directory full of all my beloved mp3s that now look like: c-w--wsrw- 1 8630 25368 202, 214 Jun 5 1949 #65344 s--S--sr-x 1 4175 36387 4294967295 May 29 1955 #65415 s-wSr-S--x 1 56681 12921 4294967295 Aug 30 1989 #65423 b-ws-wx-wt 1 11441 39367 78, 45 Oct 21 1988 #65443 brwsrwxr-x 1 59069 26490 4, 101 Nov 2 1934 #65471 c-ws--s-wT 1 19065 5093 171, 150 Aug 16 1987 #65528 b--sr-srwT 1 28270 29558 147, 142 Jan 11 1907 #7390 br-sr-sr-T 1 30066 34441 116, 113 Jun 5 1913 #7427 :( No idea if these are recoverable but since I have a cable modem, recovering all these legal mp3s that I own the original CDs for should be a problem.
