I wouldnt believe that the Adaptec could handle higher
SCSI ID's than 7 if its a "normal" Adaptec (eg 2940).

Only the wide Adaptec SCSI cards can handle >7 scsi ID's
with the controller itself being ID==7!

change the CDROM ID to something lower then 7 (eg 5)
and try again.

the device would then be: /dev/scd0.
