My old gateway was a 386DX40 with dual 40Mb HD's, and 8Mb of ram. What a
beasty .. it had an uptime of about a year before I moved house, then about
200 days again until a power supply failure made me replace it.. It did IP
Masq etc, WWW/FTP server etc on a 56k conneciton (4 PC's) with loads
averaging 0.00.
So, to answer your question .. The 486 will work a treat as long as you
rectify the serial card problem.
On the topic of uptimes.. Did anyone watch Seinfeld last night?? (George and
the frogger machine) I had thought about trying to do something dodgey like
that when moving house to save my uptime! Somehow hooking up a UPS without
losing power.. :)
