IANAL, but...
I very seriously doubt it. Australian Patent law does not allow for
an algorithm to be patented, only a particular implementation of an
algorithm.
So, they could possibly have a patent over their way of doing LZW, but
not the algorithm itself. (Although I seriously douth they have either)
