This may be totally un-related but...
I had an old 486 which was upgraded to a P233 but made use of the same
networking card. Network throughput was just shocking (on 486 or P233).
After getting sick of trying to install Linux over the network I decided to
debug and find out the problem. Turned out to be the NIC which was set to
autodetect whether to use the BNC or RJ45 connector. When I specified BNC (yup
I'm using thin ethernet) the performance was as expected for a 10mbps
ethernet. Oh yeah, i was using the supplied configuration program for the NIC
(dos proggy). This was an IDE cheap-arse NE2000 clone.
