Could be OK .. but probably bit on the dearer side. Depends what kind it is.
Laserjet 4 is usually used for 4/4+/4M/4M+. To simplify
4 means: very slow now days, PCL 5 only.
+ models: have a faster CPU (and thus PPM)
M models: M for Macintosh? These have PostScript by default.

The easiest way to find out what the model is, how much ram, whether
postscript is installed is to use the printer buttons to print a self test
page. This will also show how well does the printer print. If it has
postscript installed it should also have postscript test page and postscript
demo page.

As to the price:
- I've bought my 4Si (10MB RAM, ethernet connection, 17ppm) a year ago for
$374. This is about double the speed of average 4. I paid at the high end of
the auction price as I needed printer in a hurry. Recently I've seen two
IIISi (still faster then Laserjet 4) go at an auction for $55 each. They
seemed in good nick, and had ethernet cards. On the other hand traders will
charge you about 3-4x the auction price.
