Bit of a personal mind dump here, if you dont want to waste time, just move onto the next message, nothing to see here people. Ever notice how there are lots of different people in the world? Ever notice that there is not just one type of car on the road? Ever notice that some people get project homes, and others get an architecht and builder? Lets just face it people are different and view different things differently. I care about computers a lot, they mean something to me. Some of my friends don't give squat about computers, which concerns me but they seam to function as a human being quite well despite it. I really don't care much for mechanical things, I am more likely to purchase a new mower/washing machine/home appliance once its natural life span IMHO has come to an end. It drives some of my mechanical tinkering friends nuts, my step-dad went to a lot of trouble to get a new belt for a very old and crappy dryer that I had no afffection for. The thought of turfing this machine simply because it needed some tender loving care drive him nuts. "You will never be able to maintain one of those new ones" was his argument, they are all electric and costly to fix, anything can go wrong with this and you can get it going again. It went in one ear and out the other, for goodness sake, its just a dryer, you just put cloths in it man! So what about Linux, I use it because I want to, and people in like mind to me want to. Its fun, its functional, its easier. I don't really care what other people do or don't use. If some people want to make Linux easier to use with better package management, great. I will probably use, it. Thats one reason why I am going to give debian a try. If that means that some people might use Linux that were not before, cool. The difference is IMHO is that with closed source (lets not just single MS out here) that freedom of choice is somewhat removed. We all have to use Windows the same way, we all have to look the same and do things the same. With Linux if there is enough need someone will create a distribution/package manager/applications that meet that need. Off the top of my head we can already see Corel or Mandrake going one way and something like Debian or Slackware going another. The cool thing is we can have our cake and eat it too. With Linux we can mirror society and get some diversity back into the world. I dont want to be like everyone else and I dont want everyone to be like me. Um ... lots to ponder ... an argument thats not really that fruitful as there are not winners ... Rodos P.S. No flame wars on cars all have the same user interface, if you think that you are missing my point. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug
