I'm also what this list would probably classify as a 'newbie'. I have a basic understanding of the command line and tend to stick to the kde GUI interface. I also use the kde2 alphas without too much trouble. I can use the command line to complete most tasks with a good tutorial and the reason I can is because of the support I recieved in the beginning when asking 'sad' questions like this one. The intellectual snobbery of some, destroys the enjoyment that 'newbies' and GUI users get from making the switch to the freedom, online community and sharing that Linux brings. I am free from M$ because of lists like these and you should be ashamed of yourself.
