I had the same problem, which I managed to fix by tweaking a few of the HDD
BIOS settings.
Some of the funky stuff they do now days doesn't lie too well with Linux.

hdb: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
hdb: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
ide0: reset: success

hda = master
hdb = slave
Both on ide0
Identical segate 17gb disks
Kernel=2.2.6

hda has been and still is working ok

So, anyone suggest what I can do to fix this ??
