Almost right.
In the case of my parents, my father was used to DOS (CLI) to run an
accounting package and has had no end of difficulty using Windows. If the
package upgrade (GST & Y2K complient) had been available under Linux I don't
think he would have had so much difficulty as he's had using Windows.
Firstly he had to work out what the mouse was for... and complains long and
loud at every system glitch.
My mother however is used to Windows 98, having first used Windows 95. She
has no difficulty running GUI based apps but has enormous difficulty
understanding hierarchical file systems and CLI, and has managed to pick up
all the bad habits Rick listed.
I am starting to think that Linux is getting closer to being the "OS for
every occasion" than it was say 6 months ago. What's stopping it at the
moment ? Well nothing really ... my parents always get a knowledgable person
in to fix their PC problems. And software vendors IMHO need to take the
effort to understand how to port their product to Linux. "Desktop Distros"
need to have sensible crontabs set up so that the user doesn't fill up the
hard disk in the first couple of months of operation (eg SUSE can be set up
properly this way).
Cheers,
Jill.
