I've kept quiet for most of this thread, but in theory I am writing a
peice of software called Beefmail (and I can't remember why I called it
that) that is currently vapourware, but I intend it to have this
feature, and more... think xmms (or winamp) for email -- you have
ui/mail out/mail in plugins and settings for them, and all hangs around
one small core.

Like I said, it's vapourware, and it's been in the works for about 2
years now.  I've only just started to find time to begin work on it.
Oh, and it'll have Mac and windoze versions of it too, for the less
fortunate amongst us.
