don't run 'startx' here, run 'fsck /dev/hda3'

when that is done, type 'exit' and just let the computer reboot
itself.

It's nothing to do with Gnome (directly) ... it's a more general
problem that your filesystem is corrupted.

when you have finished using your computer and want to turn it off,
choose "log out" from the gnome start menu and choose the "halt"
option -- don't simply turn the computer off without halting Linux,
or you will risk this kind of filesystem corruption.
