Well you don't make them by hand. There is a tool you can use, figlet
(http://st-www.cs.uiuc.edu/users/chai/figlet.html). There is a web
interface at http://www.surfplaza.com/figlet/ .
Just enter your text, click the "all fonts" and it generates them all in
seconds.

I think people use figlet to generate big text when on IRC to
really make a point. I am thinking of using it on my computer generated
emails to make them look a little nicer.
A good tool to have in any Linux hackers toolbox.
