I seem to recall that there are some public domain packages around for monitoring log files, looking for a configurable range of patterns and raising alerts eg. emails. However I've tried searching the Web for appropriate keywords and can't seem to hit anything that I remember. I'd like to try and use something existing before I start hacking Perl.
