Hey sluggers.
I'm not sure if anyone can help with this problem but if someone can
point me to a good place to ask I'd sure appreciate it. I'm just don't
know whrere to point the question.
Running Debian woody and I've got a Riva TNT2 card. So I grabbed The
Nvidia kernel and GLX drivers and installed X from the linux binaries.
Everything went fine from the X install with the default card driver.
Installed the NVidia kernel and GLX driver and away we went - no
problems.
Now as well all know, the measure of a system is Quake 3 :). Grabbed
linuxq3ademo and installed it. The first run went as slow as a dog - I
mean real slow even on the menus. Additionally, the GL screensavers were
dog slow as well. The FAQ says remove any Mesa stuff which I did which
(un)happily also uninstalled xscreensaver-gl as well *sigh*. I also went
on a file hunt and removed any Mesa vestiges.
Then I went back to Quake3 and tried to run it again. Blam! X-crashed
with the following in just about every log file kernel: cannot
write-combine memory mapping

So I guess I have 3 questions:
1. WTF does that error mean and what do I do
2. Can I get my cute GL screensavers without Mesa (more of a deb
question)
3. Do I play quake in Windows? :)

If anyone has sucessfully done a TNT2/X-4.0.1 setup perhaps we could
chat off list.

Cheers,
 Graeme
