Well, a counter example.

If you wish to change the system you won't do it on your own.

Maybe you form a political resistance group with cells. As members
you may have to identify yourselves to each other. (Resistance movement
in Nazi occupied France comes to mind). Perhaps you have temporary pass
phrases.

Hence you have a rudimentary protocol for establishing trust.

You can still stick up posters on walls anonomously, it's just
that this technology might allow you to do much more.

Remember, also, that identity could have a different meaning on the
internet.
