i believe the debian pppoe package is rp-pppoe.

and i didn't need a script, since its only a simple ppp connection (as
far as the system goes) and there are already plenty of simple ways to
get a ppp connection on bootup.

i did have to type my username and password into a file, i suppose
that could be hidden in a setup script if you wanted.

to be honest, its slower than i expected.

for now, i'm assuming thats because we go all the way to melbourne and
all the telstra infrastructure is "optimised" for cable, not
adsl.

currently we only get about half the speed we should (although i
haven't done large enough downloads to really test it). i expect all
these things will improve shortly.

the "level 2" support guy was happy enough to discuss linux setup with
me, even though he had no idea whether the system used pap or chap. he
said he was interested in getting linux setup information, since they
get asked reasonably frequently, and didn't have any info of their own.
(heh, the "level 1" guy freaked when i asked him - and he just kept
repeating my login and password to me)
