Despite my initial suspiscion, this worked (sort of).
It was not as clean a swap as I'd hoped.
Seems my .xinitrc was overwritten by an application I have loaded.
Anyway, finally managed to kill X off (it really hung around like a
bad smell) and have RH 6.0 version of gnome running at present.

Hope you don't mind me CC to Slug list, but I think your suggestion
should go to the archive for future referral.
