You are thinking of DCOM, not COM. It's actually a lot more complex than
that.
MacOS -> Windows -> WM_USER -> DDE (MacOS heritage)
DDE -> OLEv1 -> OLEv2/COM. (Still no Unix)
RPC -> DCE -> MS/RPC. (Unix heritage)
MS/RPC + COM + CORBA -> DCOM
However it is fairly clearly COM -> Bonobo, not DCOM -> Bonobo (Gnome
already used CORBA and switched to Bonobo because CORBA didn't quite fit).
Now given that COM had already evolved to DCOM by the time Bonobo was born
you can argue a Unix heritage or not. It's really not that important
anyway.
