OK,
I've had adsl for 24hrs now, and have the verdict of the service for you all. Its crap. I have tried downloads from Australia, which while faster than dialup are pathetic compared to optus cable (but at least I can do more than 500mb per day). International, there is almost no difference from 56k dialup. http is painfully slow, my mail still takes forever and ftp is marginal at around 7-12kps on average. Hopefully when all traffic is no longer routed through melbourne it might pick up.
The final and most important detail is that when connecting to Telstra Counter-Strike server, I had a ping of 110-150 on average, but found I was browning out every few seconds, and lagging for up to 20 seconds at a time, if not disconnected all together, this was the same on one.net and optus servers as well.
I sincerely hope telstra picks up its game instead of offering this pathetic excuse for broadband, I for one will be jumping ship as soon as I can convince optus to re-connect me.
On the upside, my problems with PPPoE on my slackware box are no more. I turned on the box to try my luck and found the video card no longer works.
