I take it that both of these are IDE hard disks.
I don't know the problem (just now).
I remember starting the first partition from cylinder 2 fixed this on
some machines.
Something about not using LBA comes to mind. Linux will read the disk
parameters and make up its own mind about disk parameters, ignoring
the bios settings.
Also vaguely remember something in Slug Pearls recently (off
http://www.slug.org.au somewhere).

What have you done differently this time.
My 2c is auto recognition of the new drive under BIOS and linux
doesn't like it. Rather, the mbr doesn't like it.
