I own a ThinkPad 310E (which, I admit, is not a terribly close
relative) and have found that the Fn-F3 combo correctly cycles through
LCD-only, LCD+CRT, CRT-only in both text and video modes. What is
interesting is that this setting appears to be kept seperately for both
text and video modes! The result is that a situation can arise where, as
I switch between virtual consoles, the output device changes depending
upon whether the console is in text or graphics mode. If the machine
starts in LCD mode and the text consoles are switched to CRT mode, the
Xservers will (initially) all start in LCD mode.

What I have found helps to get all virtual consoles in both modes to
start out at CRT-only is to have the monitor plugged in and powered on
before powering the notebook on.

(Another handy trick for frequent use this way is to have your Xserver
configured to attempt the preferred CRT resolution (1152*864 in my
case), then the LCD resolution (800*600 in my case), in that order, and
no other resolutions. In this way, when the Xserver starts on the LCD,
the higher resolution mode is disqualified automatically, when it's
started on the CRT, the higher resolution mode is treated as the
default. In both cases, the Xserver starts in the desired resolution,
without any other fidlling, or xvidtune -next, etc.)

Hope this helps.
