Yes, that's worked.

Both of these are now configured to load at startup, one with the BOOTPROTO 
set to dhcp, and the other with the appropriate details.
At first, the ne would stall while loading because if BOOTPROTO was set to 
dhcp in an ifcfg-ethx file, ifup would unsuccessfully try to use pump to 
obtain an IP address. Commenting the 3 lines 'if BOOTPROTO = "dhcp"' in the 
ifup file takes care of this.

Yes, it is set, but I've still had no success with dhcpcd. Any other 
suggestions anyone? Apart from the NIC being configured and cable modem 
being physically connected to it, what else is there other than to issue the 
command:

>dhcpcd -h <hostname> interface <interface>
