So what's stopping you reading the manpage for the command and modifying
your script when it blows up?

Like you said, you can often merge commands to _make_ them do what you
want, but why bother when your primary target is a GNU utils based
machine?  Sure, when (if) you move to another platform, you'll quite
probably have to modify your script(s), but I don't see this as a big
issue.   Make it work when you need it to work, don't waste your time
making compensations for situations you don't have to face.
