sounds like ppp.  Ie. using minicom to dial into my ISP, once the
username/passwd stuff is done, ppp starts on their end and minicom
prints gibberish (as the PPP HOWTO says it should), I can then
exit minicom without resetting the modem and manually start pppd
at my end.  This is the "manual" login procedure rather than chat
scripts etc, it can help debugging these sort of problems.

If it's your work you're dialing into, can you change it so you
get a shell login rather than automatic ppp?  Do you know what
it is exactly you're dialing into?  maybe there's some weird ppp
incompatibilty?
