With the APC ones you can download a daemon from
http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/ that monitors the UPS and runs various
scripts (which you configure) when any of about 30 events occur.  Events are
anything from voltage deviations, power fails, battery replacement
schedules, high temperature and others.  Download the Linux stuff and have a
look if you like.

One of the things I like about APC is they provide their daemons/NT services
for free, including updates.
