OK...
so I'm screwing around with the sync rate of my xf86config file, as you do,
cause it's flickering, and I fudged the entire thing so it doesn't work
anymore. Couldn't work out what broke, so I decided it was a good time to
upgrade X to 4.0.1 and KDE to 1.1.2
Downloaded them, and installed X first, then KDE, now it all seems mostly
OK and it starts kdm
I type in username and password, the screen goes blank, then comes back
waiting for username and pass again.
/var/log/messages shows
date time machinename PAM_pwdb[666]: (KDE) session opened for user brock by
(uid=0)
date time machinename PAM_pwdb[666]: (KDE) session closed for user brock
if I go to non X mode (init 3), and do startx it starts up a plain old X
session, non KDE.
I also had to make a symbolic link from /etc/X11/prefdm to /usr/bin/kdm so
it used the kdm instead of the urm... other dm :)
Any ideas what's still broken?
I think I have to tell the kdm what type of session I'm after, something
about a file called .Xsession rings a bell, but I don't seem to have one of
them.

PS: when kdm runs the screen does refresh better, so I guess I fixed _that_
problem.
