minicom has served you well in the past... :)

On which machine? The kernel does the dirty work on the machine you're
talking to, whilst Minicom does the work on the machine you're talking from.

Check the serial howto, and the serial console mini-howto.

My first guess would be two cables. I doubt there would be a better solution
for a funciton that requires absolute guaranteed connections - I'd love to
be proved wrong though. At first thought, it doesn't sound possible without
a few hacks to the kernel.

Jill Rowling answered my question on similar things last week. I was mostly
interested in communication *from* the UPS (via a daemon and scripts), but
it wouldn't surprise me by half if you could control certain UPSes via the
same daemon. I'd wager they'd be the expensive models tho.
