I am also in a slightly similar position, where I left
school after completing the 'preliminary HSC course'
(Yr 11 :) last year, much to the dismay of my physics
teacher.
As I was really eager to get into IT, I didn't want
to waste another year, I immediately began working in
the family business. Since then, I have had the
opportunity to expose myself to Linux and OpenBSD, in
such areas as administration, networking, C/PHP & CGI
stuff, postgreSQL etc., areas within which I was
completely clueless before I left school (apart from
the C part).
At this moment in a parallel dimension, my twin,
Xela, is facedown in a Macbeth novel in preparation
for the upcoming HSC. I however, am focusing on
acquiring more Un*x skills for my future instead ;)
That said, it hasn't been easy (*long* hours) and I
understand that I've still barely scratched the
surface. That is why I am looking for another job to
build on my skills, and also attending a couple of
Linux courses at TAFE (thanks to Geoff :). I think it
would also be a good idea to do an IT course, during
the next year, while I am working.
Anyway, that's been my experience, and I hope this
has been of some help to readers in a similar
position.
I would really appreciate it any of the more
experienced people on this list could reply with their
thoughts on Un*x jobs?
Regards,
Alex
