I've come to the conclusion that my main problem is the motherboard. It
doesn't seem to be happy handling a range of hard disks from old 200Mb
to 8Gb (mode 4) stuff. I'm having great difficulty getting 1.2MB disks
to install and reboot sucessfully (that other OS).

Linux of course handles it okay as it uses its own stuff to handle the
hard disk and not the bios on the motherboard. Oh well, another trap for
young players.

Out of my price range.
