If you learned only one thing from what you have done, the time was not wasted.
It looks like you have learnt that you don't like the learning curve of
trying another distro. I know what it is like, having peridocially changed my
distribution to see what they are like.
Thus you have learnt. Good luck in the future if you do decide to give debian
another go.
IMO, if it takes you less than a month of effort to learn how to set up your
linux box how you want it, that it is not a linux box.
