hi

Being a newbie myself and just moved from mandrake(near enough) to deb 4
days ago in fact. I find that sure RH is a good distro , it installs
wonderfully looks great is nicly setup when u finaly get there. But i
learnt how to do things with programs ie i used linuxconf to set up my
networking i used DrakConf to setup my hardware my X and everything.

When i got hit with the deb shell i relised i didnt know how to get some
things working w/o helper programs. So after a bit of fussing i am now
ruunning my box almost exactly the same as it was before but with all the
candey of apt-get, stability etc etc

my point RH & Mandrake did not teach me what i really needed to know, I
may have shrunk back to my hole if i had to start off w/ deb because it is
more complex but if i could have keeped pushing myself reading docs etc I
think that deb gives a feel of what linux is more like and would probly
give a better frame work for more complex stuff in future.

BTW i started on the list about 8 months ago and i felt a little bit
nervous posting but that is probly a good thing to an extent as sometimes
there was just a little prob pissing the hell out of me and it forced me
to RTFM.

(no offece to RH & Mandrake)

just my 2 us cents worth about .0000001 au cents ;-)
