For those interested, we finally solved running sendmail without DNS. You can use define the service switch file eg: define(`confSERVICE_SWITCH_FILE',`/etc/service.switch') which tells sendmail to look in hosts file first. Red Hat has an nsswitch.conf file, but the format is incompatible with sendmail.
