I don't know if this will help, but when I put in dual CPUs and installed RH6.x, it gave two boot options: linux and linux-up. The first is configured for the two CPUs and the latter is for one CPU. If their are hangups with the former, you can use the latter to get in. Various books say to run lilo at /etc/lilo.conf which is fine, but the RH reference manual says to also run /sbin/lilo.
